Brawl Stars roles explained
Smart Draft sorts every brawler into roles, and the roles are what the draft assistant actually reasons with. Knowing who counters whom is most of the work in a Ranked draft.
- AntitankPunishes anything that has to come close: tanks and assassins. 27 brawlers.
- TankTakes space up close and beats control, but falls to antitanks. 19 brawlers.
- AssassinDives fragile backliners; a reaction pick, never an opener. 22 brawlers.
- ControlHolds space with zones and area damage; weak to tanks and assassins. 30 brawlers.
- SupportHeals, shields or boosts the team rather than carrying alone. 13 brawlers.
- SniperDeals damage from the longest range; needs the right map. 12 brawlers.
- ThrowerHits targets behind walls; safest as the last pick. 11 brawlers.
- DamageGeneral damage dealers whose value depends on range and map. 11 brawlers.
- Gem carryCollects and holds the gems in Gem Grab. 3 brawlers.
Who counters whom
The core relationships in the assistant's model:
- Antitanks beat tanks and assassins: anything that has to come close.
- Tanks beat control brawlers, and assassins can't counter them.
- Assassins beat fragile backliners such as control brawlers, throwers and snipers, but they can't beat antitanks or tanks.
- Throwers beat antitanks and control brawlers from behind walls, but they're fragile against assassins.
Two more ideas sit on top of the chart. First, a brawler is tracked both by the role it plays and by the role it gets countered as, and the two aren't always the same. Second, raw strength can override the chart: a top-of-the-meta brawler can win a matchup it should lose on paper, and the assistant says so when it happens.
Supports, damage dealers and gem carriers are about what a brawler does for the team more than about who it beats, so they don't have fixed arrows in this chart. Each role page explains the details.
